Can You Switch From a UK Student Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa? (2026 Guide)

  • 3 min read

Many international students aim to transition into the UK workforce after graduation. Switching from a Student visa to a Skilled Worker visa is the most direct path to residency and eventual settlement.

In 2026, the rules are stricter than in previous years, specifically regarding salary thresholds and English proficiency. This guide covers everything you need to know to make a successful switch.

Eligibility: Can You Switch Inside the UK?

Yes, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa without leaving the UK, provided your current Student visa is still valid. However, since the July 2024 “Switching Restrictions”, there are specific timing rules:

  • Degree Students: You must have successfully completed your course.
  • PhD Students: You can switch after completing at least 24 months of your programme.
  • Job Offer: You must have a job offer for a role at RQF Level 6 (graduate level) or higher from a licensed Home Office sponsor.

2026 Salary Requirements for Students (New Entrants)

Most students qualify as “New Entrants,” which allows for a lower salary threshold for up to 4 years. However, the “new entrant” floor was raised in July 2025.

New Entrant Salary Threshold (2026)

As a student switcher, you must be paid the highest of the following:

  • £33,400 per year (up from £30,960)
  • 70% of the “going rate” for your specific occupation code
  • £17.13 per hour (the absolute hourly floor)

Important: If you do not qualify as a new entrant (e.g., you are over 26 and not a recent graduate), the standard threshold is £41,700 or 100% of the going rate.

Updated English Language Requirement (2026)

A major change took effect on January 8, 2026.

  • Previous Requirement: CEFR Level B1.
  • Current 2026 Requirement: CEFR Level B2 for all new Skilled Worker applications.

Note: If you have a degree from a UK university, your degree certificate usually satisfies this requirement automatically.

Alternative: The Graduate Visa Route

If you haven’t secured a sponsored job offer yet, the Graduate Visa (Post-Study Work) is still an option:

  • Duration: 2 years for Bachelor’s/Master’s; 3 years for PhDs.
  • Application Deadline: You must apply before December 31, 2026, to receive the full 2-year duration. (New rules proposed for 2027 may reduce this to 18 months).
  • Flexibility: You can work in almost any job without a sponsor while you look for a long-term Skilled Worker role.

Common Reasons for Refusal in 2026

  1. Salary Pay-Period Breaches: As of April 2026, the Home Office checks that you meet the salary threshold in every pay period (monthly), not just as an annual average.
  2. RQF Level Mismatch: Many roles previously eligible (RQF 3) now require RQF Level 6 for new applicants.
  3. Applying Too Early: Attempting to switch before your university has formally confirmed your course completion to the Home Office.
